Cursed (2005, Wes Craven)

Cursed is like most Wes Craven’s movies; technically well-crafted, but with a sloppy, silly narrative. The public and critics hated this film, but I thought it was fairly amusing. It is a brainless movie, but the whole thing is meant to be dumb and cheesy. Writer Kevin Williamson is horsing around with the werewolf subgenre, the same way he joked around with the slasher (Scream), and the monster subgenres (The Faculty). It is true that the movie has problems, but it is not a total failure. The difficulty the filmmakers have here is that John Landis (American Werewolf in London) and Joe Dante (The Howling) had already done this kind of spoof/homage in a brilliant manner, so the movie feels awfully derivative. But as an homage to the “Grade Z” movies of yesterday, I thought the film worked okay. The low quality special effects are right on the money. It’s Sesame Street for adults.
