30 Days of Night (2007, David Slade)

30 Days of Night is gruesome vampire saga that attempts to play around with myths associated with the subgenre, but it doesn’t really pull it off despite some good ideas, high production values and a few spooky moments. Plot holes and silliness, not garlic or crucifixes, kill the film. I think director David Slade relies too much on the assumption that viewers know how vampires operate. But oddly enough, none of the residents of this little town seem to know what a vampire is. The creatures keep sucking people dry and the locals keep yelling, “who are these people?” And the bloodsuckers look like little possums – little eyes, long nose – hardly scary-looking monsters. Brian Reitzell’s music score is chilling but it sounded a bit too similar to Ennio Morricone’s work in John Carpenter’s 1980s classic The Thing. It is lowbrow entertainment though.
