Of all the movie stars of the silent era, Lon Chaney had the strongest screen presence, so his acting alone makes this film very interesting to watch. The fact that he plays multiple roles is another reason to see the movie. Chaney’s complex make up alone is worth a look. The movie is a bit racist in its depiction of Asians, but this is typical of any film from the era. But in other areas of the narrative the film seems to be ahead of its time. Sharp viewers will notice how eager the film is to criticize the way westerners ridicule the Orient, which is something never seen in a production of this vintage. Anyhow, Chaney is the whole show here, so if you like the actor, you will enjoy the movie.
