Antibodies (2005, Christian Alvart)

This gripping movie of a cat and mouse game between country bumpkin police inspector and child killer is like a cross between The Silence of the Lambs and Fritz Lang’s German classic M. Director Christian Alvart, a relatively newcomer, does an outstanding job with a variety of complex issues like pedophilia, provincial mentality, Christianity, etc. It’s a bit long and the twist near the end of the film is not hard to predict but it is terribly intense, and well-crafted. But if you cannot see crimes against children this film is not for you. It doesn’t have much gore but it does have plenty of disturbing images. André Hennicke’s creepy killer makes Hannibal Lecter look like Dr. Phil. Wotan Wilke Möhring is excellent as the religious, guilt-ridden police officer who develops a strange relationship with psychopath Hennicke. If you are looking for something both intelligent and shocking, this film is for you. Antibodies is a great serial killer movie.
